In 6 months, you should be able to play pretty good. I won my first contest after 8 months of playing.
Have to admit that I practiced 6 hours a night , every night but I became profiicient rather quickly. I listened to a lof of instrumental Venture albums and developed a very good timing and ear training.
As for the lessons, I charge $75 an hour but I only teach advanced students. You are paying less because you are a beginner.
Depends on where you live but it seems in most parts of the U.S., $20 for half an hour is about right. Of course, some well known teachers can and do charge a lot more for advanced lessons. But for beginner lessons, that’s reasonable.
As for how long it would take to get to the intermediate level, and how much you would learn — that depends entirely on you — how much innate musical aptitude you have, how much time you’re willing and able to spend practicing every day and how conscientiously you apply yourself. Only you can answer that question.
One thing I can tell you is that if you expect to pick up a guitar today and be playing in a band in 6 months, you’re probably going to be disappointed. To get REALLY good on guitar takes YEARS.
That’s a pretty good rate. I know a lot of people charge $30 for a half or more. Unfortunately we can’t say exactly how long it will take as lessons just guide you better and (hopefully) teach you proper techniques. What you put into it will determine how fast you progress. Unless you have a bad teacher, you should learn a lot. After all, you know nothing (about guitar), so what is there for you to not learn? Lessons will always help you progress much faster than you would teaching yourself because with any instrument, people teach themselves bad habits which will either prevent further progression later, or will kill a lot of time trying to break the habit and re-learn techniques again with proper techniques.
Its like Left T says …its up to you if you practice a lot and take lessons you will do much better.
